How to Prepare Loose Herbs & Tea Blends
How do I brew loose leaf herbal tea?
Most loose leaf herbal teas can be prepared by steeping 1–2 teaspoons of herbs in 8–10 oz of hot water for 5–15 minutes, depending on the herbs and your taste preference. Cover while steeping, then strain before drinking.
What is the difference between an infusion and a decoction?
An infusion is a steeped preparation, often used for leaves and flowers. A decoction is a gently simmered preparation, often used for denser botanicals like roots, barks, berries, mushrooms, and whole spices.
Do roots and barks need to be simmered?
Roots, barks, berries, mushrooms, and dense spices often benefit from a longer steep or gentle simmer to bring out a fuller flavor. Product pages may include specific preparation suggestions.
Why do some teas say to strain thoroughly?
Some herbs, such as mullein, may contain tiny natural leaf hairs. For those blends, we recommend using a fine mesh strainer, cloth, or paper tea filter before drinking.
Can I drink the teas iced?
Yes. Many herbal tea blends can be brewed hot, strained, chilled, and served over ice. Fruit-forward, floral, minty, and hibiscus-based blends are especially popular iced.
